Wheels on the Bus

Wheels on the Bus

Hi!
Thanks for popping in!  I would like to take a moment to share about our week in community!  This week we read Seals on the Bus by Lenny Hort.  It was a fun and silly spin on Wheels on the Bus.  The kids loved it!
If you've been following my blog posts; you know that this year I am itinerant.  I plan for 1 hour which is how much time I get with each student in the community.  Here is the picture schedule that I use to help with time management and keep things on track:
After reading Seals on the Bus, we continued the bus theme with this school bus color matching file folder game:
We followed that up with this cute and simple school bus craft.  You can download it for FREE in my TpT store.  Just click on the photo:

Continuing with the bus theme; we learned about the letter B.  I chose 2 different activities to meet the different needs of my students.  We worked on the letter and initial sound with this phonics matching activity:

We also read "My Little Book About B," which features the sight words:  "see" & "the."  You can download the letter A version of this book for FREE in my "A- Letter of the Week Packet."

For our counting activity we did this "Kids on the Bus" number to quantity matching activity:

There's no way for me to do all that I would like in 1 hour; but for you I've included additional activities that you can use in the classroom with this lesson.  I hope you enjoyed my post!  You can access the resources shown by clicking on the photos.  Download the FREE LESSON PLAN here.  Finally, I've also included affiliate links for Seals on the Bus and toy buses for your convenience.   Thanks so much for taking the time to read my post!  And thanks for stopping by!

Homework & Communication Folder

Homework & Communication Folder

Hi All!,
I am so excited to link up with the wonderful ladies at Kinder Tribe and share my Homework and Communication Folder for What Worked Well Wednesday!
One thing that I believe is so important for pre-k and kinders is homework.  Why should learning how to follow a routine and practicing readiness skills, stop when the children leave school?  Good study habits start early.  Even if it's just a little something, they should begin practicing a homework routine.
So this is what I've been doing.  I ask parents to buy the plastic folders with pockets.  One pocket is labeled "RETURN" for items that parents need to return.  The other pocket is labeled "KEEP" for items such as student work that has been checked, notes from the school, etc.  I used a sticky for mine but for you, I made these labels:
Upon opening the folder, the parent will find their child's Behavior Chart on the "RETURN" side.  Here's my Behavior Chart.  It may be a little detailed for a general ed. class but a general ed teacher could use it for a behavior intervention plan.  Breaking the day up into segments allows for more opportunities to earn positive marks.  (FYI our district is using Frog Street for pre-k this year so Read Aloud = Story Time.)

Also on the "RETURN" side is the Homework Packet.  Here's the cover sheet.  I put together a packet and top it off with this cover.  There's No Homework on Fridays:
Next comes the Name Tracer page.  I want my kids to practice tracing their name every day until they can write it on their own.  Here it is with my name:
This year I've added a new page to my homework packet.  It's the Read Me a Story page or the Reading Log.  In an effort to increase my student's stamina for sitting and listening to a story or other presentations in class, I ask my parents to read their child a story at home every night.  If the child has a favorite that they want to hear over and over, I'm fine with that.
Parents are asked to put the title of the story they read and initial the form nightly.  That's the best I can do for accountability.  If everyone is playing fair, then it all works out wonderfully for the little ones! =0)
Finally, 1 (one) simple page of practice from things we're learning in class for each night Monday through Thursday.  That's it!  Every night the kids have to do 3 things:

1.  Trace their name,
2.  Listen to a Story.
3.  1 practice page from what we've learned in school.

Not too much, and not too little for a 4-5 year old.  It's just enough to put them on the right track for developing good study habits. This homework packet has been working out nicely in my class.  The parents and students are responding well to it.  I hope that it is something that you can use in your classroom.

You can get a FREE copy of this Homework & Communication Folder from my TpT store by clicking on the cover below:

Be sure to stop by Kinder Tribe for more "What Worked Well Wednesday" posts!  Thanks for stopping by! =0)

Bulletin Boards Your Way!

Bulletin Boards Your Way!

Hi All!,

This week I am linking up with Lucky Little Learners and Schroeder Shenanigans in 2nd to talk Bulletin Boards!

I am still in love with my room decor from last year.  I didn't keep my room exactly the same though.  I changed the bulletin board paper and borders to mix things up.  I kept the "Under the Sea" theme, but I wanted it to be more "Under the Sea-y."  Don't laugh, I am really going for calm and peaceful.  When you teach kids with autism, sometimes things get wild! =0)

I used printable decor.  This year I wanted 2 BIG "mer-people" to go with my theme.  Of course they didn't exist, so I had to make them!  I love the way they turned out!  Now I'm going to show you how to make YOUR bulletin board YOUR WAY!

If you can't find what you're looking for in the store, all you need is your favorite piece of clip art, lamination scraps, a black Sharpie, and a few pieces of colored paper!  Here is what you do:

STEP 1:
Grab your favorite piece or pieces of clip art and trace them!  I used these cute little mer-people from Educlips.  Just use a Sharpie and trace them onto scrap lamination paper.

STEP 2:
Next, you're going to need one of these.  What is this monstrosity you ask?  It's what they used before smart boards!  It's called an overhead projector.  There should be at least 1 or 2 hanging around your school somewhere.  Look in the storage closets!  =0)

STEP 3:
Next, place your tracing on the projector and project your image onto a wall.  This picture is dark because the image shows up better in the dark.

STEP 4:
Next, tape your paper to the wall and trace the image.  Seriously, if you can't find an overhead projector you can probably just tape your paper to a smart board and achieve the same results.

STEP 5:
You may need to trace parts of your picture onto different colors of paper to accomplish the look you want.

STEP 6:
Now just cut out your pieces and put them together!  I suggest gluing all of your smaller pieces onto 1 large piece.  You don't want a bunch of small pieces with nothing to stick them to! =0o

STEP 7:
Now stand back and admire your handy work!

For more bulletin board ideas visit my cute bulletin boards or classroom decor Pinterest boards.  You can also visit the classroom decor section of my TpT store where you are sure to find a FREEBIE or two!  I hope that you enjoyed this post and I hope that it will be useful to you when planning your next bulletin board!

Thanks to Angie Olson and Ashley Schroeder for creating this party!  And special thanks to Educlips for the AWESOME clip art!  Keep the party going by visiting these terrific bloggers!
