Spring Lesson Plan {Distance Learning}

Spring Lesson Plan {Distance Learning}

Hi!
      I hope that you had a great weekend!  We are still doing Distance Learning in our district due to the governor's COVID-19 Stay-at-Home mandate.  The kids are really adjusting well!  Here is what we did last week:

      As always; I am using my Visual Picture Schedule - even during Zoom sessions:

      This week we read I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Frog by Lucille Collandro:
      Ss was our Letter of the Week; S for Spring!  For Morning Message I modeled how to write the letter S using my clip board and a marker:

      That carries us right into number 4 of our count down of tasks which is "Does This Begin with the Letter Ss?" or as I wrote it on my container: "Is it Ss?"  During this segment of our Zoom; I pull objects out of my container 1 at a time to show to my students.  We've already discussed S and the sound it makes so now we simply look at each object and use our listening ears to determine if we hear an Ss sound at the beginning of the word.  The kids have fun doing this part.
      Next we practice a math skill (Number 3 on the schedule ).  This week its 'More or Less?'  I used heavy duty tape to adhere frog counters to craft sticks (since the old lady swallowed a frog).  I used different colors and different quantities on each stick.  I held 2 sticks up at a time and posed the question, "Which has more?"  The students were able to answer, "The blue!" or "The yellow!"
      Number 2 on the schedule was our Number of the Week:12.  I modeled writing the number 12 on my clip board.  And since I had already used the frog counters for 'More or Less,' I decided to make a Google Slides Presentation of Frogs on Logs for the students to count.  For this activity I  shared my screen with the students.  This was a 1st and they really seemed to enjoy it.  I've included a link to a FREE copy of the presentation in the resources page of the lesson plan.

      Number 1 is always the House.  I tell my students to go with their parents to the Google Classroom after our session and complete some of the follow-up activities that I've posted.  They can review the skills we went over plus skills that we've been practicing throughout the year in the At-Home Learning Packet.  I try to post enough to keep my students busy for a week if the parents want to work with them.
      Well, that's all I have for today!  I hope you found something to be useful!  Here's the Lesson Plan:

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and thanks for stopping by!

God Bless,

Asia

Distance Learning: April Showers

Distance Learning: April Showers

Hi!
      I hope this post finds you and your family well.  I thought that I would take a moment to share what we've been doing during the Stay-at-Home orders.  As you know, we are all getting settled into Distance Learning.  I have been holding my Circle Times over Zoom and posting follow-up activities to Google Classroom.  Here's what we did this week:

      Our stories for this week are Little Cloud by Eric Carle and It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles G. Shaw.  I am still following my picture schedule.  It may have changed a little since I last blogged.

     Morning Message used to be practicing writing the student's name because I worked with them in community 1-on-1.  Now I try to see my entire caseload in 1 Zoom session per week.  It would take forever to write everyone's name; so instead I feature a letter and model writing it and saying it's sound.  Students are asked to use their pointer finger to write the letter in the air and repeat the sound with me.  Then they are asked to say what words they know that begin with that sound.

      Each number on my schedule represents an activity that we do together.  Number 4 is a follow up to the letter which was modeled.  I just hold up objects from a bin that both begin and do not begin with the letter R.  I call on students, "What is this?"  "Does this begin with the letter R?"  "Can you hear the R sound when you say that word?"

      Number 3 is a little activity that I hooked up to follow up on the story.  I made a simple printable of shapes and cut them out on white paper like clouds.  I use a blue laminated file folder as my backdrop and arrange the shapes in random order.  I move them around to make a car, a house, and candy!  I call on students to guess what I made.  In the Google Classroom I've included  a copy of the shapes for my students.  Parents are encouraged to print them and cut them out at home so their child can make things with shapes like Little Cloud from the story.  My classroom is private; but I've included a FREE copy of the shape printable here.

      Last but certainly not least, no lesson would be complete without a little counting.  Once again I pull out my Rain Drop 10 Frames.  I love using blue floral glass beads for raindrops!  Because I did this activity over Zoom I used a clip board to hold it up to the camera and packaging tape to hold the beads in place as we counted.

      The house on my schedule represents an activity that the students do at home when the Zoom Circle Time is done.  For this I upload a variety of different leveled materials to the Google Classroom for parents to access and use at home.   I include link to a YouTube video of 'It Looked Like Spilt Milk' by Charles G. Shaw (read by another teacher); my April Showers At Home Learning Packet; a few pages from my Letter of the Week R packet; and the shape page that I mentioned earlier.

      I record each session with parent's permission and make it available in the Google Classroom (which is private).  This allows the students who missed it to see it; it allows the students who participated to see themselves in the video; and it allows me to review and collect data for their portfolios.

      Well that's it!  I hope that you enjoyed this blog post and found it to be useful!

      Thanks for taking the time to read my post and thanks for stopping by!

5 Homeschool Skills to Practice With Your Child

5 Homeschool Skills to Practice With Your Child

Hi!
      Are you looking for some relevant academic activities to do at home with your Pre-K or Kindergarten aged child?  Well I've put together a few of my favorites.  I hope that you will find them to be useful!

  1. Sorting by Attribute:  Practice sorting by 1 or more attributes such as color, shape, and size.
  2. Reading Comprehension:  Don't just stop at reading the story!  Follow up with questions; have your child practice re-telling the story; change the endings; or have them draw a picture to show their favorite part!
  3. Name Activities:  Still learning how to read and write their name?  Try making simple name puzzles or scrambling the letters then placing them in the correct order!
  4. Tracing:  Does your child already know their name when they see it?  Can they put the letters in order?  Well now it's time to Trace!  Use a highlighter to write your child's name and let them trace it!  Don't stop at tracing their name; trace letters, sight words, and numbers!
  5. Counting & Number Recognition:  Pick a number, any number and count out that many!  Make it interesting by having your child count out their favorite toys or treats!  Check for number recognition by reversing it!  Place a given number of items in front of your child to count and have them select or write the matching number!

      Well that's all that I have for today.  I hope that you found this to be useful.  For more information about how to create and implement these activities; click on the video link below:

      Thanks for taking the time to read my blog post and thanks for stopping by!
