Pumpkin Lesson Plan

Pumpkin Lesson Plan

Hi!,

I just wanted to pop in and share with you my Pumpkin Lesson Plan from last week!  The kids really enjoyed reading Pete the Cat Five Little Pumpkins along with a few follow-up activities.  Here's what else we did:

Since we were talking about Pumpkins; we learned about the letter P!  We snipped orange strips and glued the pieces onto a Pumpkin Coloring Page.

We also learned about other words that begin with P using our letter tub literacy center activity.

      We discussed emotions...

We practiced color matching and identification...

      Same and different...

      Pumpkin shapes...

      Pumpkin shadows...

      Pumpkin number to quantity matching...

      Pumpkin number sense...

And we also made some pumpkin prints!  Other activities included pumpkin exploration and pumpkin themed videos.  The links are included in the lesson plan.  Click the photo to download:

Thanks so much for taking the time to read my post!

Halloween Fun

Halloween Fun

Hi All,
I am so glad to share this unit with you.  I've been using it in my class this week and I have to say that it has been a life saver!  As you know I teach children with autism and sometimes their behaviors can be challenging.  We were doing great but then we reached a point where the kids were pretty much DONE after recess.  You know, like "stick a fork in it, I'm DONE!!!"  I couldn't get much at all out of them at all!  They barely wanted to sit for a story!

One of the speech therapists came with a cute little shape monster activity.  By cute, I mean I liked the words.  The graphics were Board Maker (BIG YAWN).  So I took the idea and put my own spin on it.  I added colorful graphics and the container with a cut out mouth to "feed" shape monster.  Not only did the kids enjoy it, but they "ate it up!"  It was literally a God send!

I taught them how to do it on the 1st day.  Once they were comfortable with the format, they looked forward to doing this every day.  It became a very nice "go to" for the month of October.
Shape Monster Game Pieces:  Small Group & One-On-One
Shape Monster Poem:  Works with the Monster & Piecess-
Read a Rhyme, then Let Student Match the Shape & Place it in the Container.

Monster Match Up- Match Colors & Practice Fine Motor Skills!
Who's in the House?  A Monster is in the House!
Shape Monster was so nice, I did it twice!  Only I made, Who's In the House?
Same concept:  Read & Show the page.  Have students Match.
Lift the flap to find the character you are showing.
"Who's in the House?, Who is this?  It's Frankenstein, can you find Frankenstein?  Student lifts flaps to find and point to character.
Pieces for Who's in the House

The Pumpkin Patch

The Pumpkin Patch

Well, we've been talking about pumpkins for about 2 weeks now.  We've read pumpkin stories, learned pumpkin songs, made pumpkin crafts, planted pumpkin seeds, and just about anything you can think to do with a pumpkin.

So today was the big day; a field trip to the Pumpkin Patch!  I was excited myself because even though I've been teaching for years; this was actually my first time visiting the pumpkin patch.  As an early interventionist,  I don't always have kids that I can bring out.  I've really been blessed this year.  No pull-ups, running and melt downs are minimal, and I have very helpful parents.

The pumpkin patch was awesome!  The kids had a wonderful time.  We did a hay ride, picked pumpkins, the kids ran around the pumpkin patch, and we enjoyed a picnic lunch.  We had a wonderful day!

Boo!

Boo!

This one is for the grown-ups!  Every year at our school the faculty and staff engage in a game of Boo!  It's a lot of fun.  This week I got boo'd.  Here is what I got:

Imagine going about your day at work then walking into your classroom and finding a little surprise on your desk.  Fun right?  Well that's what boo is all about.  Once you get boo'd, it's your turn to boo.  You go to the host, draw a name (no peeking), then go boo that person.  This is what I gave:

I found a cute little card that said Boo and I put a $5.00 PJ's gift card in it.  $5 is the amount each gift needs to be worth.  I thought it was a cute idea because there's a PJ's on the way to work.  My boo'ee could stop there and grab a cup of coffee on the way to work.

Ooops!  The picture came out upside down but you get the point.  Another part of the fun is that you never know who boo'd you.  I don't know who boo'd me but a little birdie told me that the person I boo'd liked her gift!

If you would like to play boo at your school, you can download it here.

Happy Boo'ing!,
Asia
